“The actions of the US side contradict all the main norms of international law,” said Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.
“Washington’s responsibility is also clear for the continued disastrous consequences of such cowboy-like behavior,” he added to the council.
Nebenzia also called the U.S. blockade of Venezuela an “act of aggression.”
Meanwhile, China’s representative Sun Lei at the UN also rejected all forms of unilateralism and intimidation and expressed support for the sovereignty of countries.
“China opposes all acts of unilateralism and intimidation and supports all countries in defending their sovereignty and national dignity,” said China’s representative, Sun Lei, as quoted by AFP.
Venezuela, which requested an emergency meeting of the council with the support of Moscow and Beijing, accused Washington of carrying out “the biggest blackmail in our history.”
Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada told the council that the world is now in the presence of “forces acting outside international law, demanding that Venezuelans leave our country and surrender it.”
“This is the biggest extortion ever in our history,” he added.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador Mike Waltz responded to criticism by saying “the US will make every effort to protect the hemisphere, borders and the American people.”
Waltz repeated Trump’s accusations against the Venezuelan leader, saying, “Nicolas Maduro is a fugitive sought by American justice and the head of the foreign terrorist organization ‘Cartel de los Soles’.”
Earlier, US President Donald Trump accused Venezuela of using oil to finance “narcoterrorism, human trafficking, murder and kidnapping.”
However, experts say there is no evidence of the existence of an organized group with a clear hierarchy using the name.
Caracas denies involvement in drug trafficking and believes the US wants to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to control Venezuela’s largest oil reserves in the world.
The US has deployed large military forces in the Caribbean and intercepted Venezuelan oil tankers deemed to be violating sanctions.
The US government is also offering a reward of US$50 million (around Rp. 830 billion) for information leading to the arrest of Maduro, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Since September, US forces have carried out dozens of airstrikes on ships suspected of transporting drugs and killed more than 100 people.
