, Russia’s latest advances come ahead of a meeting of United States, Ukrainian and European officials in Geneva to discuss United States President Donald Trump’s plans for ending the war.
Washington previously gave Ukraine a deadline of November 27 to agree to the proposal.
However, Kyiv rejected several points in the initial draft that were deemed too accommodating of Moscow’s tough demands. The plan, which consists of 28 points, is said to require Ukraine to hand over some of its occupied territories, cut its military strength and promise not to join NATO.
In return, the draft promises security guarantees from the West to prevent future Russian attacks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the proposal and called it the potential to “lay the foundation” for a permanent peace settlement. However, he also warned that Russia could seize more territory if Ukraine refused to resume negotiations.
Meanwhile, Kyiv is under intense pressure to navigate the diplomatic dilemma, accept terms deemed detrimental or risk escalating fighting in the country’s east.
