Malaysia U-23 national team

.This decision had to be taken after discussions with coach Jean-Paul de Marigny.
Mohd Joh explained that club management proposed that Tierney be released temporarily to the Harimau Malaya U-23 squad to face Laos in the opening match of Group B. The match will be held at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok, Saturday (6/12).

De Marigny admitted that he really needed the services of the 22-year-old striker in preparations for the FA Cup final against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, 14 December.
“Our (management) proposal is that Tierney be released for one match to help the national team against Laos and after that return to the club. However, the coach still wants Tierney to remain with the team and focus on preparations for the FA Cup final,” said Mohd Joh.
The Sabah FC coaching team, continued Mohd Joh, emphasized that the decision to involve Tierney was the coach’s absolute authority.
“For this final match, they (coaches) have told us beforehand that if Sabah qualifies for the final, Tierney will not be released. That is not my responsibility because we have set a target with the coach,” said Mohd Joh.
Management believes that the Malaysian U-23 national team and the club are equally important.However, the coach’s decision cannot be interfered with.
“We respect the coach’s decision and in short, Sabah FC also needs Tierney’s services,” said Mohd Joh.
Before appearing in the FA Cup final, Sabah FC will also compete in the Malaysian Super League against PDRM this Saturday, to coincide with the Malaysia U-23 vs Laos match.
This decision is detrimental to Malaysia who are struggling in the 2025 SEA Games. Apart from losing Tierney, the young Harimau Malaya is also threatened with not being strengthened by six other players who have not been released by their respective clubs.
