Usually, the type of salt used is Epsom salt, which contains magnesium and sulfate.The name Epsom itself is taken from an area in England which is famous for its natural salt water sources.

However, is it true that a salt water bath can relieve fatigue?
The theory circulating is that the magnesium and sulfate in Epsom salt which dissolves in warm water can be absorbed by the skin or inhaled through water vapor.This substance then enters the body and helps relax the muscles.
Magnesium is the second important mineral after calcium and plays a major role in muscle, nerve, heart function and blood pressure regulation.Unfortunately, many people are deficient in magnesium due to insufficient intake of foods such as green vegetables, nuts and whole grains.
This is where the belief arises that soaking in Epsom salt can increase the body’s magnesium levels.Unfortunately, until now there is no strong scientific evidence to show that human skin is capable of absorbing significant amounts of magnesium.
A dermatologist from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Nicholas Theodosakis, refutes this theory.
“Skin is a barrier, not a sponge. Those of us who develop topical drugs spend a lot of time making substances that can penetrate the skin because it is very difficult,” he said, quoted by National Geographic.
According to him, the best way to increase magnesium levels is through food or supplements.
“The intestines are designed to absorb substances. That’s the opposite of the skin,” he added.
Even so, many people still feel a relaxing effect after bathing in salt water.Most likely, this effect comes from the warm water which helps improve blood circulation and makes muscles more relaxed, not from the salt.
Warm water itself can temporarily lower blood pressure and help the body feel calmer, whether Epsom salt is used or not.
A salt water bath really feels calming and can be a relaxing ritual after a long day.However, scientifically it has not been proven to be able to truly relieve fatigue.
