A satellite image shows
North Korea
is building a secret uranium enrichment plant at one of the country’s nuclear sites.
The United States-based North Korea monitoring group, 38 North, analyzed the images taken from October to November at the Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center.
“This shows the continued modernization and expansion efforts of [the Yongbyon nuclear research center],” experts were quoted as saying

The facility is North Korea’s most important location for producing and enriching plutonium and uranium. These two materials are the main materials for making nuclear weapons.
Based on analysis of satellite imagery, Pyongyang is likely building a large, heavily guarded complex northeast of the laboratory.
According to a report by 38 North the building structure consists of two floors with a central hall measuring approximately 120m x 47m – resembling Kangson’s design and footprint.
Kangson is another secret enrichment factory suspected of supporting North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
The new facility is growing “most actively since early 2025,” with six potential heat exchangers on the southeast side of the building.Heat exchangers are usually used to cool the centrifuge and keep the temperature stable.
Analysts in the 38 North report also said the installation of these units shows interior work is progressing well, even as supporting buildings and connecting corridors continue to take shape around the complex.
“Work to develop land around supporting buildings to the south of the suspected uranium enrichment site appears to be underway. The purpose of the construction of these buildings is not yet known,” 38 North reported.
This new activity occurs as Yongbyon’s modernization continues to expand. The nuclear research center is North Korea’s only plutonium producer and a major source of uranium enrichment.
“All of these improvements are aimed at helping fulfill Kim’s call to increase his nuclear arsenal exponentially,” the report continued.
The latest developments at the facility are in line with Kim’s instructions to speed up the production of nuclear materials.
During a visit to arms-related institutions in January, Kim described 2025 as a crucial year for strengthening North Korea’s nuclear forces.
