National Disaster Management Agency (
BNPB
) stated that search and rescue (SAR) operations for flood and landslide victims in three provinces in Sumatra, namely Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, would continue.
This decision was taken after BNPB coordinated with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and took into account the dynamics of reports of missing victims in the field.
“Our SAR operations are adjusted to data on missing victims reported in each district/city,” said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in Banda Aceh, Sunday (14/12), reported

This SAR extension is said to be a form of the government’s commitment to ensure that all reports of missing victims are followed up seriously and accurately.
“Even though in several areas there have been no reports of missing victims, the Basarnas team remains alert because there is a possibility that victims will be found in other nearby administrative areas,” said Abdul.
SAR in North Sumatra will continue in Central Tapanuli Regency, South Tapanuli and Sibolga City.
Meanwhile in West Sumatra it was continued in four regions, namely Agam Regency, Padang Panjang City, Padang Pariaman Regency and Tanah Datar Regency.
Meanwhile in Aceh, SAR will continue in six districts, namely Bener Meriah, North Aceh, Central Aceh, Bireuen, Aceh Tamiang and Nagan Raya.
Victims found in different areas will still be strictly identified based on name and address, then matched with population data to confirm the victim’s area of origin.
This step is considered important to maintain the accuracy of national data and prevent duplication of recording.
Abdul also said that currently several districts still have Basarnas Alert status, so if there are new reports of missing victims, SAR will be carried out again.
On Sunday, the joint SAR team led by Basarnas found 66 dead victims, consisting of 33 victims in Aceh, 19 victims in North Sumatra and 14 victims in West Sumatra.
According to Abdul, in the last week the data on missing victims has decreased by 58 people because a number of victims who were previously reported missing have been found.
This decrease was also influenced by the results of sub-district-based re-verification carried out by the regional government.
“The identification process in the field is very dynamic. There are special cases, for example bodies found in burial areas and it turns out to be residents who had died before the disaster. After verification, the victim data will be adjusted,” he said.
On the same day, the SAR team also found 10 bodies, nine victims each in Aceh and one victim in Agam Regency, West Sumatra.
Data on the total death toll in three provinces increased from 1,006 people to 1,016 people.
