The weather around Semeru is reported to vary from sunny to rainy, with weak winds blowing to the southeast and south. The air temperature in the area was recorded to be in the range of 21-24 degrees Celsius.
According to Antara, in terms of seismicity, Semeru’s activity has increased.Officers recorded 157 earthquake eruptions with an amplitude of 10-22 mm and a duration of 58-185 seconds.
Apart from that, 17 avalanche earthquakes, 19 gust earthquakes, one deep volcanic earthquake, six distant tectonic earthquakes and one flood vibration earthquake with an amplitude of 43 mm and a duration of 6,499 seconds were recorded.
The Geological Agency emphasized a number of safety recommendations to the public.
Residents are asked not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan up to a distance of 20 kilometers from the peak.Outside this area, people are also asked to stay away from river borders at least 500 meters because of the potential for hot clouds and lava flows to still occur.
Apart from that, activities within an eight kilometer radius of the Semeru crater are strictly prohibited due to the potential for incandescent rocks to be thrown which could be dangerous.
Residents are also advised to increase their awareness of the possibility of hot cloud avalanches, lava flows and lahars along the rivers that originate from the peak of Semeru, especially Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, Besuk Sat, and their tributaries.
Previously, on Wednesday (19/11), Semeru was recorded to have erupted with an eruption column reaching 2,000 meters above the peak. The eruption triggered hot clouds with a sliding distance of up to seven kilometers to the north and northwest.
Eruptive activity was recorded on the seismogram of the volcano monitoring post in Lumajang with a maximum amplitude of 40 mm and a duration of around 16 minutes 40 seconds.
Seeing the dynamics of activity which are still high, the Geological Agency has set the status of Mount Semeru at Level IV or Watch. This status is the basis for determining the Natural Disaster Emergency Response by the Lumajang Regency Government, which is valid until November 26.
