The world of literature and theater mourns the death of legendary British screenwriter,
Tom Stoppard
, at the age of 88.
United Agents, the agency representing him, announced that Stoppard breathed his last breath at his home in Dorset, surrounded by his loving family.
Stoppard is known as one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century, with works that combined deep philosophical thought with witty humour.

His name skyrocketed through “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”, which then established his position on the international theater stage.
Apart from the world of theater, Stoppard is also widely known in the film industry.He won an Oscar in 1999 for the screenplay for “Shakespeare in Love”, and was involved in a number of major projects such as “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars”.
“His brilliance, humanity and love of the English language will live on through his work,” United Agents wrote in a condolence statement.
Legendary singer Mick Jagger was one of the first figures to pay tribute.
“Tom Stoppard is my favorite playwright… He leaves an extraordinary intellectual legacy,” he wrote in X.
Born in Czechoslovakia in 1937, Stoppard and his family fled Nazi occupation before settling in England.He began his career as a journalist before turning to playwriting and spending more than six decades working in theatre, television, radio and film.
For his contribution to English literature, Stoppard was knighted in 1997. He is survived by four sons from his three marriages, including one who followed in his footsteps in the world of art, Ed Stoppard.
Tom Stoppard’s passing closes an important chapter in the history of modern literature and theater, but his legacy will certainly live on and inspire future generations.
