There were no immediate reports of casualties from the Pakistani side. However, both countries quickly accused each other of being behind the shootout.
“Even though the third round of negotiations with the Pakistani side has begun in Istanbul, unfortunately, this afternoon Pakistani forces again opened fire on Spin Boldak,” said Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
“The Islamic Emirates forces, out of respect for the negotiating team and preventing civilian casualties, have so far shown no reaction,” the official added.
Pakistan denies the accusations and blames Afghanistan.
“We categorically reject the claims spread by the Afghan side,” Pakistan’s Information Ministry said.
“The shooting started from the Afghan side, to which our security forces immediately responded in a measured and responsible manner,” the ministry said.
This incident is likely to complicate the ongoing ceasefire negotiations between the two countries in Türkiye. These negotiations aim to complete a ceasefire which is expected to end deadly clashes between the two neighboring countries in South Asia.
Security issues are at the heart of Afghanistan and Pakistan’s dispute, with Islamabad accusing Kabul of harboring militant groups, particularly the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), which carry out attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban government denies these accusations.
Negotiations deadlocked
Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Taliban authorities, said “we don’t know the reason” for the shooting by Pakistan, and told
AFP
that negotiations in Türkiye were ongoing.
“Pakistan used light and heavy weapons and targeted civilian areas,” said an Afghan military source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Ali Mohammed Haqmal, head of Kandahar’s information department, said the shooting was brief.Local residents told AFP that the shooting lasted 10-15 minutes.
“The situation is under control thanks to responsible actions by Pakistani troops and the ceasefire remains in force,” the Information Ministry said.
“Pakistan remains committed to ongoing dialogue and expects reciprocity from the Afghan authorities,” the ministry said again.
Negotiations in Istanbul reached an impasse last week when it came to finalizing the details of a ceasefire. Each party accused the other of being unwilling to cooperate.
Both sides also warned of a possible resumption of hostilities if that fails.
Host Turkey said at the end of talks last week that both sides had agreed to establish a monitoring and verification mechanism to maintain peace and punish violators.
Fifty civilians were killed and 447 others injured on the Afghan side of the border during a week of clashes in October, according to the United Nations. At least five people died in an explosion in Kabul.
The Pakistani army reported 23 soldiers killed and 29 wounded, without mentioning civilian casualties.
The Taliban government wants Afghanistan’s territorial sovereignty to be respected.
Islamabad also accused the Afghan government of acting with the support of India, its arch enemy, amid increasingly close ties between the two countries.
