South Korea is one of the countries that is very strict about cancel culture. When an artist is caught in trouble, especially a crime, brands and many projects immediately erase traces of that artist.
Some of these television channels have removed Cho Jin-woong’s part, such as SBS replacing Cho Jin-woong by re-recording the narration of the documentary Gangsters: The Price of Corruption.
KBS also locked the broadcast of the documentary Special Envoy Cho Jin-woong Brings Back General Hong Beom-do, which has actually been uploaded to YouTube since 2021.

Attention is now on tvN as the Second Signal production house.Because, Cho Jin-woong has finished filming Signal season 2 with Lee Je-hoon and Kim Hye-soo.
Fans were also made uneasy considering that the Signal sequel finally got the green light and was produced about a decade after the first season was completed.
Korea JoongAng Daily
on Sunday (7/12) reported that one of the tvN representatives said that they were “still discussing whether to broadcast the drama Second Signal or not” due to Cho Jin-woong’s problems.
If it airs, the production team is expected to have to reshoot most of the scenes because Cho Jin-woong is one of the drama’s main actors, and the drama that was targeted to be broadcast this year could be pushed back.
Dispatch on Friday (5/12) reported that Cho Jin-woong committed several offenses when he was still in high school in 1994, such as sexual assault and theft, and he was sent to a juvenile detention facility.
The report also claims Cho Jin-woong was fined in 2003, when he was not yet widely known, for assaulting members of a theater troupe while drinking alcohol, and that his driver’s license was also revoked after driving drunk.
Cho Jin-woong made his debut in the film Once Upon a Time in High School (2004) with the stage name Cho Jin-woong, not his real name, Cho Won-joon.
A source quoted by Dispatch claimed the name change was intended to hide his criminal history.
Agency response
Saram Entertainment as Cho Jin-woong’s agency admitted that it partially confirmed the actor’s past violations, but denied the allegations of sexual assault.
“We confirmed to the actor that he had made a mistake while still a minor,” the agency said Friday (5/12) evening.
“However, this confirmation is based on facts dating back more than 30 years and it is difficult to understand the entire situation. However, we would like to emphasize that he was not involved in any sexual assault.”
The day after the news, Cho Jin-woong apologized and announced he was leaving the world of entertainment.
“I apologize for disappointing those who supported and trusted me because of my past violations,” Cho said in an official statement on Saturday (6/12) evening.
“I accept all the warnings. Starting today, I will suspend all my activities. I will end my career as an actor,” he said as reported by the Korea JoongAng Daily, Saturday (6/12).
