, believes that Indonesia’s way of selecting talented players is too late.
From Simon’s observations, talent monitoring is usually carried out at the age of 13.This is different from in Europe where they are usually selected from the age of eight.
This was conveyed by Simon in an interview with PSSI which was released on Friday (7/11).Simon started as Head of PSSI Talent Scouts in May 2025.

“In the Netherlands, from the age of eight there has been a selection for potential future players. In Indonesia, frankly, it is too late. Make the selection at an even younger age,” he said.
“In Indonesia we start selection from the age of 13-14 years. Slowly and we have to follow it like in Europe, namely from 8 years old. However, it takes time and we have to be a little patient.”
According to this former Ajax Amsterdam player, the best phase to introduce the basics of football is under the age of eight. This is a crucial phase of player growth and development.
If a player has been familiar with basic soccer techniques since the age of five, for example, the player’s talent can be measured and directed when he reaches the age of eight.
“This can be tried because basic introduction at an early age is very important so that at the age of 13-14 years, we already know whether this young player is talented or not,” said Simon.
