, Lee Jae Myung, claims his country’s ability to develop
nuclear powered submarine
is the main achievement of negotiations with United States President Donald Trump.
Lee’s latest statement comes after South Korea announced last November that it had completed an agreement to build a nuclear-powered submarine, in partnership with the United States.
In a fact sheet released by the White House in November, the US was said to have approved “attack submarines” and agreed to cooperate in procuring fuel.

“South Korea’s ability to secure nuclear-powered submarines is a major achievement of the negotiations with Trump,” President Lee was quoted as saying

Trump, in a post on Truth Social last October, said the ship would be built at a shipyard in Philadelphia, managed by South Korean conglomerate Hanwha.
“I have given approval to build nuclear-powered submarines, instead of the antiquated and far less agile diesel-powered submarines they (South Korea) have now,” Trump wrote.
Trump’s statement came a day after the US and South Korea reached a major trade agreement.Trump on Wednesday (29/10) arrived in South Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC Summit).
During his meeting with Trump, Lee Jae Myung asked Trump to allow South Korea to receive fuel for nuclear-powered submarines.
“We are not proposing to build nuclear-armed submarines, instead (we want nuclear-powered submarines because) diesel submarines have lower wading resistance, which limits our ability to track North Korean or Chinese submarines,” said Lee Jae Myung.
Currently only six countries have nuclear-powered strategic submarines, namely the US, China, Russia, Britain, France and India.
South Korea itself already has around 20 submarines, but all of them are diesel powered so they need to surface more often.
Nuclear submarines are claimed to be more powerful because they are able to operate further and faster.
Nuclear-powered submarines also have the ability to dive under the sea, much longer in a matter of months than any fuel-powered submarine.
