Chairman of the PSSI National Team Body (BTN) Sumardji revealed the reason for resigning from his position as Manager

Sumardji took the decision to resign as a form of responsibility for Indonesia’s failure in the men’s soccer sport at the 2025 SEA Games. Indonesia U-23 failed to defend its gold medal.
“I will hand over the duties and responsibilities of [Indonesian National Team Manager] both senior and age group, to the General Chair [PSSI, Erick Thohir],” said Sumardji in Jakarta, Tuesday (16/12).

“So that the Indonesian National Team Manager can be found as the most appropriate, sincere and responsible figure. I will focus on BTN because in the future BTN’s task will be extraordinarily difficult,” he said.
Resigning from the position of National Team Manager, said Sumardji, did not come suddenly, let alone pressure from outside.This ensures that his resignation has been very carefully considered.
“I handed over the duties to senior managers and the age groups have gone through careful consideration. I admit that the managers’ duties are very difficult,” he said.
“Because you have responsibility and you have to think about achievements. And if you think about achievements, you think very far, even small things outside of technical matters,” said this member of the PSSI Exco.
Sumardji said he wanted to focus on building the Indonesian National Team through BTN.According to him, BTN is still in contact with the National Team and covers all age levels.
“I really want to reduce the intensity which requires a lot of focus. Intensity is inherent in the team, focused on BTN. Because actually at BTN I will always face the national team.”
“Starting from age groups to seniors. If there is a manager, my job will be reduced to staying with the children at various events,” explained Sumardji.
Sumardji also apologized for the failure of Indonesia U-23 in the 2025 SEA Games. He realized that Garuda Muda’s performance had disappointed many parties.
“I apologize to the public regarding the failure of [the U-23 Indonesian National Team] at the 2025 SEA Games. We were unable to qualify for the semifinals. This is difficult and disappointing,” said Sumardji.
This man with the rank of Senior Commissioner of Police said that PSSI is currently focused on preparing a schedule for the Exco meeting to discuss prospective coaches for the Indonesian National Team.
There are two names that will be the main topic in the discussion. These two names, said Sumardji, are a summary of the four figures interviewed by PSSI.
Later the two names in question will be discussed at the PSSI Executive Committee meeting.Sumardji only said that the meeting would be held in the near future, without mentioning a definite date.
