Suzuki Motor Corporation (
SMC
) explained that the acceleration of the electric car (Battery Electric Vehicle/BEV) population in Indonesia was driven by incentives from the government.Even though they are now very popular, SMC believes that BEVs will not be able to replace cars with internal combustion engines (ICE).
“So BEVs have probably become very popular very quickly so far, but that’s largely because they are based on (providing) incentives in the form of tax cuts or some kind of funding support,” said Masafumi Harano, Executive General Manager Asia and Latin America and Oceania Automobile Dept Global Automobile Marketing SMC, in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan, Thursday (30/10).
“How it will continue is important for us to see. Because if the incentives continue, on a large scale it will make BEVs even more popular, but the incentives will not last forever,” said Harano again.

According to him, SMC is paying special attention to the Indonesian market, including compatibility with the products offered by Suzuki.According to him, in five years or later ICE cars, including hybrid versions, will remain mainstream.

“Of course BEVs will come, but they will not surpass ICEs. That is impossible because the cost (of production) of batteries and the driving distance so far cannot match it. If you want long distances then the price goes up,” he said.
It is said that BEVs can remain popular as long as the incentives continue to flow, but Harano said that these incentives cannot last forever. It is said that this incentive pattern to support BEVs is not only implemented in Indonesia but also in other countries and there is a deadline for providing it.
Even though it is felt that BEVs cannot replace ICEs, Suzuki is still developing BEV products because the company has chosen to implement a multi-pathway towards carbon neutrality.BEVs are considered one way to achieve carbon neutrality and other technologies such as hybrids or biofuels have the same opportunity.
Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) will launch the first mass-produced BEV, the e Vitara, in Indonesia in 2026. SMC at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show has shown the Vision e-Sky concept model which will be the second BEV model.
The mass production version of the Vision e-Sky will launch in 2026 in Japan. However, this car is designed to follow kei car regulations and there is no confirmation that it will be released in Indonesia.
So far, Suzuki in Indonesia has produced various mild hybrid models which mark its entry into.era of electrification, namely Ertiga, XL7, Grand Vitara and most recently Fronx.
