in Damascus also reported similar incidents.
“We heard reports of heavy machine gun fire, mortar shelling [and] families fleeing,” Ayman Oghanna reported.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Civil Defense Agency said two officers were injured after the vehicle they were traveling in was fired upon by the SDF.Two children also suffered “various injuries” from SDF fire at the Sheihan roundabout.
In an official release, the Syrian Ministry of Interior reported that two security personnel, including a soldier, were injured as a result of the incident.
The ministry described the attack as a betrayal by the SDF against Syrian security forces.
“Tonight, SDF forces stationed in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo committed acts of treachery against the Internal Security Forces stationed at joint checkpoints,” the Syrian Interior Ministry said in a release.
The SDF denies targeting civilian areas, and accuses factions affiliated with the Syrian government of carrying out the attacks.
The Damascus-based government strongly rejects the SDF’s accusations.
After fighting for hours, the Syrian army and the SDF agreed to stop attacking each other.
This clash occurred when Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Damascus and held talks with officials regarding the integration of the SDF into the national army.
In March, Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa signed an agreement stating that the SDF could enter state institutions. The deadline for the agreement is the end of the year.
However, the details of the integration process are still unclear and implementation has also stalled. If nothing happens by the end of the year, a number of parties are worried about the potential for military conflict.
Previously, Damascus proposed merging the SDF’s 50,000 militias into three divisions, with partial control by Syria.Türkiye strongly opposes this, and wants to dismantle the existing SDF command structure.
The US-backed SDF has controlled large swaths of territory in northeastern Syria since 2015.
“The issue of integrating the SDF into the Syrian government forces is perhaps the most likely factor fueling the conflict in Syria today and it really threatens Syria’s national unity,” Oghanna added.
Visiting researcher at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, Samy Akil, said there were several reasons why the agreement had not been implemented, including a lack of confidence-building measures between the two parties.
Akil explained that the SDF is under great pressure to start implementing this agreement and hand over the territory they control.
At the same time, the Syrian government is also under pressure from Türkiye to find a diplomatic solution.
“There is a lot of pressure on both sides, and I think the reason why these clashes are happening is to disrupt the negotiations or put more pressure on the Turkish side,” he said.
Türkiye considers the SDF part of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a group it considers terrorists. They also oppose the incorporation of the militia into the national army.
