Purbaya said the government would strengthen the rules prohibiting illegal imports of used clothing as regulated in Minister of Trade Regulation Number 40 of 2022. He also plans to increase sanctions in the form of fines against importers who are proven to have violated them so that the state does not only bear the costs of destroying goods.
He also asked Customs officials to tighten supervision and take firm action against perpetrators of illegal imports.
According to him, protection of local industry is the first step to strengthening the national economic base before competing in the export market.
