The Nation Thailand
reported that the decision was announced by EFCOC spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat on Monday afternoon at 12.05 at the Thai Government Office
Siripong said that the 2 million Baht assistance would only be given to families whose members died as a result of the Songkhla flash floods.
Thailand also previously declared a flood emergency status in a number of provinces affected by severe floods.
Meanwhile, families of flood victims in other southern Thai provinces will only receive assistance according to normal regulations from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).
Siripong said Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul had visited flood-affected communities and listened to residents’ concerns. He then instructed EFCOC to remove unnecessary bureaucratic steps in the compensation process.
Anutin ordered DDPM to use digital flood maps and online household registration records from the Provincial Administration Department to verify eligibility, instead of asking flood victims to show physical documents.
He also ordered DDPM to speed up the payment of aid compensation amounting to 2 million Baht.
The families of those killed in Songkhla will receive 2 million baht from DDPM, while EFCOC will determine the appropriate amount for other provinces based on DDPM rules.
Siripong added that government doctors would assess whether individuals who died due to indirect complications related to the flood were entitled to compensation under the special scheme or not.
The government has also ordered related agencies to speed up repairs to important facilities, including restoring piped water services.
Tap water in Hat Yai is expected to be fully restored by Wednesday.
EFCOC then instructed relevant agencies to intensify garbage collection and street cleaning so that residents could return to their homes within seven days, and Hat Yai could be restored within 14 days.
Floods have hit 10 provinces in southern Thailand over the past few weeks, especially in the city of Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, which recorded the highest rainfall in 300 years, namely 335 mm in one day.
Flash floods in Thailand have killed at least 181 people and hundreds are missing, as of Tuesday (2/12), as quoted from
AFP
.
The death toll is likely to increase as the search and rescue process continues.
