The Palace said about the wave of rejection of Soeharto becoming a National Hero

Prasetyo Hadi opened his voice regarding the wave of rejection of the proposal to award the title of national hero to the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia

He said that the pros and cons of an issue are a common thing that occurs in democratic life.
“So it’s like this, regarding the title of hero, of course we go through all the procedures. That there are pros and cons, that some may agree or not is part of the aspiration,” said Pras at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Friday (7/11).

Even so, Pras invited all parties to view things from a positive perspective.
Especially, when it comes to previous leaders.He said that we as the nation’s successors must respect their services.
“Let’s reduce our efforts to always see the shortcomings,” he said.
Pras said that the awarding of the title of national hero was planned to be held on Monday (10/11) to coincide with the commemoration of National Heroes’ Day.
Pras himself admitted that he did not know for sure how many figures would receive the title of hero next Monday.
Separately, the Minister of Culture and Chair of the Titles, Service and Honors Council, Fadli Zon, said that currently there are 49 names proposed for the title of national hero.
He detailed that 40 names were proposed by the Ministry of Social Affairs this year, while the other 9 were carryovers from the previous year.
“There are 40 names of potential national heroes who are considered to have met the requirements and there are nine names which are carryovers from the previous ones. So in total there are 49 names,” said Fadli at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday (5/11).
Suharto was included in the 40 names proposed by the Ministry of Social Affairs.This also sparked controversy in society.
One of them was from the Justice Soeharto Civil Society Movement (GEMAS) which stated that the proposal was a disappointing step.
“Today the Ministry of Social Affairs, through its minister, has also sent a name proposal which will be submitted to the Council for Degrees, Service Certificates and Honors. Of course, this is a disappointing step but also not surprising,” said KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya as a representative of the coalition when contacted, Tuesday (21/10).
