The mass shooting terror killed 15 people. One of the perpetrators, Sajid Akram, was also killed in the shooting at Bondi Beach.
ABC
reported the Australian Domestic Intelligence Agency (ASIO) investigated one of the shooters, Naveed Akram, six years ago after being suspected of having strong links to the Sydney branch of the terrorist cell of the Islamic State group.
ABC
learned that investigators from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) believed that the perpetrators of the shooting had sworn allegiance to the ISIS terrorist group.
One JCTT official who did not want to be identified told:
ABC
that an ISIS flag was found in the car of the two perpetrators at Bondi Beach.
The official revealed that ASIO suspected Naveed Akram six years ago after police succeeded in thwarting an ISIS terrorist attack plan.
Intelligence began investigating Naveed after the arrest of ISIS terrorist Isaak El Matari in July 2019 in Sydney.
The official said that Naveed had close ties to Matari, who was serving a seven-year prison sentence for leading an ISIS attack in Sydney.
Matari and a number of other men were part of an ISIS cell in Sydney and were close to Naveed, according to officials familiar with the information.
ASIO Director General Mike Burgess said that one of the shooters was known to the agency, but did not specify his identity.
“One of the people we know, but not from the perspective of an immediate threat, so we need to investigate what happened here,” Burgess told
ABC
.
The JCTT is a task force consisting of elements from ASIO, NSW Police, Australian Federal Police and NSW Crime Commission.
