red in a number of traditional markets in Medan, North Sumatra (North Sumatra) skyrocketed again to IDR 100 thousand per kilogram, Sunday (30/11/2025).
This increase occurred after major floods in the last few days cut off a number of food distribution routes from production centers to markets.

North Sumatra Economic Observer Gunawan Benjamin explained that the floods and landslides that hit a number of areas had hampered the supply of horticultural commodities. Many large traders choose not to operate because access between regions is cut off.
“Supply from farmers to wholesalers has decreased significantly. Some large traders are not even selling. This has triggered an increase in the prices of chilies, onions and a number of other basic necessities,” said Gunawan.
Gunawan said the supply of chilies in North Sumatra is estimated to have fallen by 50 percent. In the midst of this decline in supply, the price of red chilies in Medan was recorded at IDR 100 thousand/kg, the highest during November.
“Then cayenne peppers were sold for IDR 50 thousand per kg, shallots were sold for IDR 40 thousand per kg, garlic was sold for IDR 43 thousand per kg. Many retailers were closed and people reduced their shopping activities due to the flood. Demand fell, so prices did not increase wildly,” he said.
Gunawan added that North Sumatra has been dependent on chili supplies from Central Aceh, Java and West Sumatra. However, the Aceh and West Sumatra routes are hampered by floods and landslides so that supplies outside the area are not optimal.
“Under these conditions, North Sumatra is forced to rely on local production. The risk of price increases is greater if further landslides occur. The government needs to ensure that logistics routes return to normal as soon as possible,” he stressed.
