Radiation
Cesium-137 (Cs-137) in
Cikande
, Serang, Banten is thought to originate from junk metal which is used as the main raw material by PT Peter Metal Technology (
PMT
).
Head of the Diplomacy and Public Communication Division of the Cesium Task Force Bara Krishna Hasibuan explained that this conclusion was based on the results of investigations carried out by his party and the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit.
“Based on information, the temporary conclusion is that the origin of the Cesium 137 contamination at PT PMT, Cikande came from domestic sources,” said Bara in a press conference at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Food, Central Jakarta, Thursday (4/12).

Bara explained that PT PMT melts used goods in the form of scrap metal from within the country. Then, these materials are
press
into a box shape and put into the melting furnace.
Smelting is carried out by burning the material at a hot temperature of 1,500 to 1,700 degrees Celsius within 2 hours.
Bara also said that the company did not carry out the storage, monitoring and disposal processes properly, which must comply with the terms and conditions issued by the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten).
“This one does not carry out the storage, supervision and transfer/disposal processes correctly in accordance with the applicable regulations, where the use of these tools for domestic industrial needs must comply with the terms and conditions issued by the government through Bapeten,” he concluded.
He explained that based on the results of inspections and investigations, the investigative team together with the Task Force from the Ministry of the Environment (LH) found that PT PMT’s industrial waste was suspected to contain toxic and hazardous materials (B3).
The waste was in the form of used refractories with a solid texture of black, white and brown which were found still piled up in the company’s production warehouse.
However, the waste management or transportation process is not carried out by a third party.
“PT PMT’s waste was thrown into one of the junk stalls in Cikande. It was discovered from the results of inspection and investigation that it was suspected that the landfill in one of the junk stalls came from waste produced by PT PMT,” explained Bara.
