in the Lower Silaing River, Padang Panjang Regency, West Sumatra.
Head of the Padang SAR Office, Abdul Malik, reported that the rope crossing technique or Tyrolean traverse was applied because access to the victim’s location was cut off and terrain conditions did not allow the team to cross manually.
“For Padang SAR Office rescue officers, the distance is approximately 50 meters,” he said confirmed from Jakarta, Saturday (30/11).

According to him, flash floods several days ago hit road users and residents’ houses on the side of the river on the Padang-Bukittinggi route, resulting in two victims being found dead.
The Basarnas Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) reported that up to now the team in the field has still not been able to evacuate the two of them because the bodies are still crushed by flood material.
“Not yet. We’re still being squeezed by material,” he said.
However, he ensured that SAR operations would continue with attention to personnel safety, considering that the river flow was still strong and the contours of the cliffs were filled with mud and rock material. The process of cleaning up leftover flood material is carried out in stages before the bodies can be removed.
Apart from that, the SAR team also carried out further monitoring along the riverbanks to ensure that there were no other victims who had not been detected.
“Coordination is carried out with BPBD, TNI-Polri and local volunteers,” he added.
He confirmed that the team from the Padang SAR Office together with other joint team officers would be deployed to several vulnerable points considering that the potential for rain was still high and the condition of the land around the hills was unstable.
The SAR team also prepared vertical rescue equipment and water equipment to anticipate other, more complex evacuation scenarios.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) previously reported that as of Saturday at 12.00 WIB the West Sumatra Province Disaster Management Integrated Command Post recorded that a total of 88 people had died and 85 people were still declared missing due to floods and landslides in the area.
