, this phenomenon occurs in Ergun City, Inner Mongolia, China, which is in a high latitude region and is always cold in winter.
Sun dogs are an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appear in the sky in the form of luminous spots at an angle of 22° on either side of the Sun and at the same altitude as the center of the Solar System.

, when this phenomenon occurs, the edge closest to the Sun will appear reddish.Other colors are sometimes visible, but more often the outside of each spot appears white.
Sun dogs occur when the Sun or Moon shines through thin cirrus clouds consisting of falling hexagonal ice crystals with their main axis vertical, in contrast to the halo phenomenon which occurs when the main axis of the ice crystals is arranged randomly in a plane perpendicular to the Sun or Moon’s rays.
The red end of the spectrum, which is bent the least, appears on the inside, while the blue end, if visible, appears on the outside.Sun dogs most often appear in winter in mid-latitude areas.
The sun dogs phenomenon commonly occurs when there is a contrast between rainy and hot conditions or a cold and quite humid climate.In particular, in places with high cirrus type clouds that have ice crystals that are diffracted by sunlight.
Apart from ice crystals in cirrus clouds and cold climate conditions, the appearance of sun dogs is said to commonly occur when the sun is low in the sky.The low sun itself occurs near sunrise or sunset.
Meteorology researcher at the College of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, Deni Septiadi, explained that sun dogs are purely an optical phenomenon due to the reflection of light and are not related to signs of extreme weather.
“However, the presence of cirrus clouds is an indication of weather changes in the atmosphere in the future. Although in some cases, the massive and complex growth of cirrus clouds involves extreme weather,” explained Deni.
