An atmosphere of sadness continues to surround the area.Hundreds of mourners flocked to a small park near the charred building, laying flowers and condolence messages for the victims, ranging from one-year-old babies to 97-year-old seniors.
“I hope people can come here to calm their sorrows,” said one visitor, Sarah Lam, citing AFP.
He said the victims experienced “a lot of injustice”.”Hopefully the truth will quickly come out, so that they don’t leave the world with wounds they shouldn’t have to bear,” he added.
Parts of the park were filled with colorful folded origami cranes, while volunteers provided paper and pens for residents who wanted to write messages.Forrest Li (26) described the garden as a “bridge”, a place of “wordless communication and expression of grief” for those who have passed away.
Renovations and safety nets are at issue
The only tower not affected by the fire finally reopened on Wednesday, allowing residents to retrieve their essential items.Authorities previously said the fire at the complex, which was undergoing major renovations, was growing due to protective netting that did not meet fire resistance standards.
Building materials, including bamboo scaffolding, protective netting, and foam boards caused the flames to spread rapidly across the building’s surface.
Responding to these findings, Hong Kong Development Secretary Bernadette Linn ordered all buildings under repair to remove protective netting by this Saturday.
Police have also arrested 15 people, including the head of a construction company, on charges of manslaughter.Six other people were arrested regarding suspected damage to the fire alarm system which was not working when the incident occurred.
In addition to the wave of grief, this tragedy also sparked major demands for accountability and reform of building safety systems.Hong Kong leader John Lee warned of criminal acts “taking advantage of the tragedy” for certain interests.
Beijing’s national security arm in Hong Kong also condemned what it called “hostile external forces” trying to exploit the incident to foment chaos.
“All actions to destabilize Hong Kong will be recorded and pursued for life,” wrote the Office of the National Security Guard in its official statement.
Local media reported three people, including 24-year-old student Miles Kwan and former district councilor Kenneth Cheung, were arrested on sedition charges before later seen leaving the police station.
On the campus of Hong Kong Baptist University, a notice board run by a student union dubbed the “wall of democracy” was covered with tall barricades on Wednesday.
A message still visible from behind the barrier reads “We are the citizens of Hong Kong. Urge the government to respond to public demands for justice.”
