Tropical Storm Koto Hits Vietnam, 3 People Killed

reported strong winds and high waves hitting ships off the central coast of Vietnam which is currently being hit by flooding.

Over the past few weeks, heavy rains have pounded the central region of Vietnam and submerged historical sites and tourist destinations.Losses due to flooding are estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars.
At least two ships were reported to have sunk in Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong provinces due to storm Koto.Vietnam’s Ministry of the Environment stated that three people died in the incident.
Meanwhile, the fourth victim is still being searched for.
Vietnamese state media reported authorities had ordered boats to beach, as well as diverting dozens of flights due to large waves and strong winds.
Koto was more than 300 kilometers off the coast of Vietnam on Sunday morning.Its status has been downgraded from typhoon to tropical storm.
Vietnam’s climatology agency said storm Koto was moving slowly and was expected to weaken before hitting the coast next week.
Rain with an intensity of 150 millimeters is predicted to occur on Tuesday and Wednesday in Hue to Khanh Hoa.
Vietnam is in one of the most active tropical cyclone regions on Earth and is usually hit by 10 typhoons or storms a year.Koto is the 15th storm to hit Vietnam this year.
Natural disasters in Vietnam this year have resulted in more than 400 people dying or going missing.According to the national statistics office, losses due to the disaster exceeded US$3 billion (around Rp. 50 trillion).
This Southeast Asian country is prone to heavy rains during June to September.Scientists have warned that extreme weather will become more frequent, even destructive, due to climate change.
