“We mourn the loss of three great American Patriots in Syria, two soldiers and one civilian interpreter. Likewise, we pray for three wounded soldiers who were just confirmed to be in good condition,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, Saturday (13/12).
“This is an ISIS attack on the US and Syria, in very dangerous Syrian territory, which is not completely controlled by them. Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa is very angry and disturbed by this attack. There will be very serious retaliation,” concluded Trump.
Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the attack took place in Palmyra, the location of UNESCO-listed ancient ruins that were once controlled by the Islamic State group during the peak of its territorial expansion in Syria.
According to US Central Command, the attack was carried out by “a lone gunman” who was overpowered and killed a short time later.
According to Parnell, the attack occurred while soldiers and translators were meeting with key leaders to support counter-terrorism operations in Syria.
The US envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, assessed that this attack targeted US and Syrian officials.
This is the first attack on the US since Al Sharaa overthrew the Bashar Al Assad regime in Syria late last year.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani said Damascus strongly condemned the attack.
“We express our condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of America, and wish the injured victims a speedy recovery,” Al Shaibani said in a post on X, as quoted

A Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity told
AFP
that this attack “occurred in an area not controlled by the Syrian President.”
In an interview on state television, Syrian Interior Ministry spokesman Anwar Al Baba said that there had been “earlier warnings from the internal security command to allied forces in the desert region” about the potential for ISIS “infiltration.”
“International coalition forces did not heed Syrian warnings about possible ISIS infiltration,” he said.
ISIS seized large swaths of Syria and Iraq in 2014 during the Syrian civil war, before being territorially defeated in the country five years later.
However, its fighters still maintain their presence, especially in desert areas.
US troops are meanwhile stationed in Kurdish-held areas of northeastern Syria as well as in Al Tanf near the border with Jordan.
