This statement adds to Trump’s long list of comments that offend the Jewish community in the US.During his political career, he often accused American Jews of voting for parties or candidates that he said were not in line with Israel’s interests.
Trump also previously called on New Yorkers to vote for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lags behind Mamdani in opinion polls.He even threatened to withhold federal funds for New York City if Mamdani wins Tuesday’s election.
Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim politician of Ugandan and Indian descent, is known to be critical of Israeli government policies.However, he firmly denies accusations of anti-Semitism that are often directed at him by a number of Republican Party leaders.
Until now, Mamdani has not responded to Trump’s comments.
For years, Trump and the Republican Party have been unpopular among Jewish voters.A Pew Research Center survey in September 2024 showed Trump trailing around 32 points behind the Democratic candidate at the time, Kamala Harris.
On other occasions, Trump has also offended the Jewish community with statements that were seen as blaming them for his potential defeat.
“If I lose the election, the Jewish people will have a big hand in that. If 60 percent of them vote for the enemy, Israel, I think, will disappear in two years,” he said at a gathering of the Israeli-American community last year.
