Donald Trump
seeks to prevent conflict between
China
and
Taiwan
by strengthening the military power of the US and its allies.
The plan is contained in the 29-page National Security Strategy (NSS) document.

“Preventing conflict over Taiwan, ideally by maintaining military superiority, is a priority,” reads one quote in the document, as reported by

China views Taiwan as its territory and has never ruled out using force to take over the island.Beijing also has extensive claims in the region, including almost the entire South China Sea which is disputed by a number of neighboring countries.
The US does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but Washington is the island’s most important international backer and is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means of defence.
The NSS document assesses instability around Taiwan as risky because of Taiwan’s dominance in the semiconductor industry and the large flow of world trade that passes through the surrounding waters.
So far, the Taiwan issue has been a source of tension in US-China relations.Trump said he wanted to maintain good relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while asking Japan and South Korea to increase defense spending as key regional allies.
“We will build a military capable of resisting aggression anywhere,” the document said, referring to the chain of islands from Japan to Southeast Asia.
“But the American military cannot, and should not have to, do this alone. Our allies must step up and spend, and more importantly do, more for the collective defense,” he continued.
The strategy is said to strengthen the ability of the US and its allies to “resist any attempt to seize Taiwan” or a move that could “make defense of the island impossible.”
The Trump administration also pledged to prevent “potentially hostile powers” from imposing toll systems or closing shipping lanes in the region, which the document said would require strengthening US naval capabilities.
The document includes a foreword signed by Trump, who calls the strategy “a roadmap to ensure America remains the greatest and most successful nation in human history.”
