The statement was made by Putin after he held a meeting with Russia’s security council, following President Donald Trump’s comments regarding US nuclear weapons testing.

The remarks marked the latest chapter in nuclear tensions between the world’s two largest nuclear powers as Putin and Trump find a way to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Putin ordered Russia’s Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry, as well as security agencies, to “gather information on this topic” and draw up “proposals regarding the possible start of preparations for nuclear weapons tests.”

Russia last conducted a nuclear test in 1990, a year before the Soviet Union collapsed.
Apart from North Korea, no other country has conducted a nuclear weapons test with an atomic explosion in the 21st century.
Putin’s threat came after Trump previously wrote on social media that he had ordered the Pentagon to “begin testing our nuclear weapons on par” with Russia and China.
It was not clear whether Trump was referring to a test involving a nuclear warhead or not.
During the security council meeting, Putin responded to statements by Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, who proposed “immediately starting preparations” for a nuclear test on the Arctic archipelago of Novaya Zemlya.
Putin has repeatedly emphasized that if Washington conducted a nuclear test, Moscow would do the same.
Last October, Putin oversaw two nuclear-capable weapons tests that did not involve atomic warheads.
The mutual threats of US vs. Russian nuclear tests heated up when Trump still failed to get Putin to agree to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on since February 2022.
Since taking office again as US President earlier this year, Trump has had the ambition to end a number of conflicts and wars taking place in various parts of the world, including between Russia vs Ukraine.
However, Trump also appeared increasingly frustrated with Putin, who rejected repeated calls for a ceasefire.
