Video footage circulating on Telegram shows a large fireball and black smoke rising into the night sky.Reuters confirmed the location of the incident although it could not confirm the recording time.
“Some of the drones were destroyed by air defenses. Some fell in the station area. Fires broke out,” said Vorobyov.
He added that backup power supplies had been activated and mobile heating systems were deployed to the affected areas.
The regional government confirmed that all efforts were being made to restore heating supplies, especially for residents in Shatura City, which has a population of around 33 thousand people.A local resident told local media that heating in homes was not working after the attacks.
A report from the Kommersant daily said three transformers at the generating complex caught fire.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding the attack.
The incident comes amid an increase in Russian attacks targeting electricity and heating infrastructure in various regions of Ukraine in recent months.Kyiv has so far focused more on hitting Russian energy facilities such as oil refineries and crude terminals to weaken Moscow’s war revenues.
While Ukraine has previously attacked a number of electricity and heating installations in the occupied territories and in areas of Russia directly bordering it, attacks on large facilities near Moscow are rare and rarely cause significant damage.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday that it shot down 75 Ukrainian drones, including 36 over the Black Sea and several others in the Moscow region.Vnukovo Airport stopped flights for almost an hour before returning to normal operations.
The Shatura Power Plant is one of the oldest in Russia, built during the Vladimir Lenin era after the Bolshevik Revolution.Previously, this plant used peat as fuel, but has now switched to natural gas.
