The M23 group has been at war again with Republic of Congo troops since Monday. As a result of this incident, 72 people were reported killed.
Since the war began, M23 managed to capture several strongholds including Uvira, which they called a major victory.Uvira is a military base and a kind of fortified government position.
The city is also a strategic location because it borders Burundi, and the Burundian army has supported Congo for the past two years.
Al Jazeera’s contributor in Congo, Alain Uaykani, reported that Uvira was devoid of national troops.
“There were no Congolese soldiersĀ in sight because most of them took boats yesterday across to Tanganyika province,” Uaykani said.
He later said, “Most of them are still on their way there.”
Congolese soldiers, said Uaykani, looted the governor’s office as they left Uvira. One senior Congolese military officer confirmed that soldiers fleeing rebel attacks were heading south.
This rebellion occurred after the President of Congo and the President of Rwanda, who were considered supporters of M23, signed a ceasefire agreement in Washington, United States.
The agreement does not cover rebels but requires Rwanda to stop support to armed groups.
