United States
is said to have attacked another ship suspected of smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Tuesday (4/11).Two people died in the attack.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the ship was involved in drug smuggling and was traveling along an illegal route.
“US intelligence confirmed that the ship was involved in drug smuggling and passing through illegal trade routes. The attack occurred in international waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean,” Hegseth said in a post on the X platform, quoted by AFP.

“We will find and destroy every vessel intent on smuggling drugs into the US to poison our citizens. Protecting the homeland is our primary goal,” he added.
To date, US air strikes have destroyed 17 ships, consisting of 16 regular ships and one semi-submersible ship.
However, the US government has not shown any evidence if their targets are actually carrying drugs or simply pose a threat to the US.
Since early September, the US has been carrying out such attacks, and according to experts these can be categorized as “extrajudicial killings.”
Although the target was a drug trafficking network, the actions involved at least 67 people in the Caribbean and Pacific region.
The families of the victims claimed many of those killed were actually civilians, including fishermen.
This drug eradication operation also led to a large increase in US military strength in the Latin American region.
The US assembled a number of warships as well as F-35 stealth fighter jets, and sent the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier group to the region. This move sparked regional tensions.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is facing drug charges in the US, has accused the US of using the drug eradication pretext to topple his regime and seize their oil.
Maduro insists there is no drug production in Venezuela. His country only became a transit route for cocaine from Colombia without his will.
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also hopes that a US land invasion of Venezuela will not occur, and he is willing to act as a mediator between the two countries.
From the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV also criticized US military activities in the Caribbean region. In his response, he said every country had the right to maintain peace.
‘But in this case it is different because it increases the tension,” said the 70-year-old pontiff.
“I believe that with violence we will not win.”The thing that must be done is to find ways of discussion,” he added.
