The White House said talks in Switzerland on proposals to end the war in Ukraine marked a “significant step forward” and reiterated that any future agreement must “fully uphold” the sovereignty of the war-torn country.
The meeting in Geneva involved US Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading a US delegation with officials from Ukraine and a number of European countries.
US President Donald Trump previously gave Ukraine a deadline of November 27 to approve his controversial peace plan.
But Kyiv is seeking a number of changes to the plan to accommodate Moscow’s tough demands.In the 28-point document, Ukraine was asked to cede territory, cut military power and promise never to join NATO.
The announcement of the new design indicates that changes are indeed being made.
“The talks were constructive, focused and respectful, affirming our shared commitment to achieving a just and sustainable peace. The discussions demonstrated meaningful progress in aligning positions and identifying clear next steps,” said a joint US-Ukraine statement after the meeting.
They stressed that any future deal “must fully uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and provide a sustainable and just peace.”
The two sides pledged to continue working on a joint proposal “in the coming days.”
The White House summary also noted that Rubio and his team have reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to ensuring that Ukraine’s sovereignty, security and future prosperity remain at the center of the ongoing diplomatic process.
