A number of airlines in
United States
canceled nearly 1,200
flight
on Tuesday (11/11).This marks the fifth consecutive day of cancellation of more than 1,000 flights due to the government shutdown.
The cancellation of thousands of flights follows the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) policy which ordered a 4 percent reduction in daily flight schedules at 40 major airports since Friday (7/11).This order follows a shortage of air traffic control (ATC) staff.

Flight cancellations have increased to 6 percent, and are expected to rise to 8 percent on Thursday (13/11), and 10 percent on Friday (14/11) if conditions do not improve.
This policy occurred in the midst of the US government shutdown which has lasted for 42 days. This government shutdown forced 13 thousand air traffic controllers and 50 thousand airport security officers to work without pay.
According to Reuters, since the shutdown began on October 1, a shortage of air traffic controllers has caused tens of thousands of flights to be canceled or delayed.Over the weekend, more than 1.2 million passengers were affected by cancellations and delays.
Referring to data from FlightAware, a flight tracking site, airlines also postponed more than 1,300 flights on Tuesday, after canceling 2,900 flights and 9,600 flights on Monday.
Airline officials said the situation was actually starting to improve, after more than two dozen disruptions occurred the day before. The FAA confirmed only one staffing issue was reported that day.
Even so, this agency still lacks around 3,500 air traffic control officers. Many officers were already working overtime and six days a week even before the shutdown began.
US President Donald Trump previously threatened to cut the salaries of officers who were absent from work, and was ready to accept the resignations of those deemed undisciplined.
The FAA and airlines are said to be discussing steps to end or reduce flight restrictions. However, this depends on the results of service recovery and the number of staff returning to duty.
