Thursday (14/11), one US official said most of the framework agreements with the four countries were expected to be finalized in the next two weeks and additional agreements were possible before the end of the year.
Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala and Ecuador welcomed the agreement. The framework agreement announced Thursday would maintain tariffs at just 10 percent on most goods from El Salvador, Guatemala and Argentina, and 15 percent on imports from Ecuador.
However, the agreement will eliminate US tariffs on a number of goods that are not grown, mined or produced in Uncle Sam’s country.
The agreement, which is similar to deals announced with Asian countries in October, includes a commitment not to impose a digital services tax on US companies, as well as the elimination of tariffs on agricultural and industrial goods from the US.
“In all of these agreements both in Asia and the ones we announced today, we maintain tariffs, we provide tariff relief for certain products, but at the same time we open foreign markets in a way that they had never been open before,” the official said.
On Wednesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he planned to make “substantial” announcements in the coming days that would lower prices of coffee, bananas and other fruit. This is an effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to reduce the cost of living for its citizens.
Trump has put a heavy spotlight on the issue of affordability after a series of defeats by Republican candidates in last week’s election.Democratic wins in New Jersey, New York and Virginia were driven in part by cost-of-living issues.
This shows voters’ concern over high prices, which economists say was fueled in part by import tariffs that Trump imposed on nearly all countries.
