The operation took place last November, weeks before US forces seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela earlier this week, citing sanctions violations. This action was also an action that Washington had not taken for years.
US Indo-Pacific Command did not immediately confirm the report. However, an official told the newspaper that they seized material that was “potentially useful for Iran’s conventional weapons.”
Nonetheless, the official noted that the items seized were dual-use, meaning they could have both military and civilian applications.
Officials said the cargo ship was allowed to continue its journey after the intervention, which involved US special operations forces.
Iran itself is still under heavy US sanctions.Neither Iran nor China has responded directly to the reports, although Beijing, Tehran’s main trading partner, regularly calls US sanctions illegal.
China’s Strong Protest
The incident comes amid a broader US military pressure campaign against Venezuela, which Caracas accuses of aiming to overthrow the government of leader Nicolas Maduro.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun previously condemned the seizure of an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, which was taken to a port in Texas, USA, on Friday (12/12).
“Beijing opposes unilateral illicit sanctions and long-term jurisdiction that have no basis in international law or UN Security Council authorization, as well as abuse of sanctions,” said Guo Jiakun.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters Thursday that the Trump administration would not rule out future ship seizures near Venezuela.
