Deputy for Small Business at the Ministry of UMKM, Temmy Satya Permana, said that traders of imported second-hand clothing at Senen Market agreed to sell local products if facilitated by the government. This was conveyed during a meeting with the trader group last Monday (3/11).
According to Temmy, at the meeting earlier last week, his party explained to traders that the government had made regulations prohibiting the sale of imported goods, including used clothing, in order to protect domestic industry.

“On Monday we met with representatives of Senen Market traders, here (KemenUMKM Office), and we talked, discussed that there were indeed complaints from them, that they were actually ready to sell local products but yes, it took time,” said Temmy during a press conference at her office, Friday (7/11).
Temmy said that traders said it was not easy to make the switch straight away because they had been selling imported second-hand clothes for decades. However, they are committed to starting selling local products gradually.
“They have been selling imported used clothes for years, and now we have to try to switch to new commodities, this will definitely take time,” said Temmy.
Not only Senen Market traders, Temmy said that the Ministry of MSMEs will also soon meet with imported used clothing traders at Gedebage Market, Bandung. The aim is the same, to provide an understanding of the intentions of government policy.
“We will also meet in Gedebage later. What is certain is that we are coordinating with the Regional Government to start collecting data on how many imported second-hand clothing traders there actually are throughout Indonesia, the exact number, so that we can prepare a backup system as to what it will be like,” he explained.
Temmy emphasized that her agency would be present to provide assistance for all traders to switch to selling local products, such as looking for producers and those who might have money and want to develop their own brand.
“We were asked to assist, that indeed the substitution of imported used clothes for local goods is one option. They might also want to develop their own brands,” he explained.
Meanwhile, a number of e-commerce (electronic commerce) platforms such as Shopee, Tokopedia, TikTok and Lazada Indonesia are committed to complying with the ban on selling used imported clothing on their shelves. The way to do this is by taking down or lowering all the links that sell the product.
Shopee, for example, stated that it had started conducting in-depth searches on their platform since the Minister of Trade Regulation 31 of 2023 concerning licensing, advertising, coaching and supervision of business actors in trading via electronic systems (PMSE) was released.
“From Shopee, we have been reducing imported second-hand goods from 2023, in fact, from ballpress at that time, but it has evolved now, we continue to coordinate and the approach really has to be humane, because there are some sellers who put manipulative descriptions, so it’s a bit humanist, we are reducing them one by one,” said Shopee Indonesia’s Deputy for Public Affairs, Radynal Nataprawira at the same press conference.
