Foreign fishing vessel (KIA) from Vietnam
continue to fish illegally (

North Natuna Sea
, Riau Islands because the fish in these waters have a high selling price.
“In the Indonesian Sea (North Natuna Sea), this fishery is an economically important fish for everyone. The fish are expensive in the world of fisheries, so they (KIA Vietnam) are interested in taking them. You could say that the border waters in our country (Indonesia) are sexy. The fish are tempting, so they chase them there,” said the Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervision (PSDKP) KKP Pung Nugroho Saksono or who is familiarly called Ipunk at Pangkalan PSDKPBatam, Riau Islands, Thursday (6/11), quoted from

The types of economic fish stolen by foreign ships include squid, red snapper, grouper and so on.
According to him, the repeated acts of fishing theft by Vietnamese KIA in the waters of the North Natuna Sea were due to economic needs.
Pung said Vietnamese fishermen use fishing gear
pearl trawling
or bottom trawling, which is operated using two 70 GT vessels. This practice is not environmentally friendly, damaging coral reefs where fish and other marine biota breed (spawn).
According to Pung, the marine damage that occurred in Vietnam due to the use of fishing gear that is not environmentally friendly has caused fish to choose to breed in areas of Indonesia which directly border the country.
This condition is because Indonesia’s marine ecosystem, especially in North Natuna, is still maintained, so the population of fish caught in fisheries is still abundant.
“Why don’t they (Vietnamese KIA) stop talking, this is a matter of their stomachs,” he said.
During the period January to November 2025, the KKP has arrested six foreign fishing vessels that were stealing fish in the North Natuna Sea.Of the six, five were Vietnamese ships and one was a Malaysian ship.
Even though the number of foreign fishing vessels catching illegal fish in the North Natuna Sea has decreased this year, PSDKP remains serious about eradicating illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.
“In monitoring and eradicating illegal fishing, the KKP is assisted by other law enforcement officers, namely the Indonesian Navy, police, Customs and Excise and BIN. Even so, we always exchange information and see who can carry out the intercept first,” said Ipunk.
For the sixth time, the KKP has again arrested a Vietnamese-flagged foreign fishing vessel which was caught stealing fish in the North Natuna Sea.
The total valuation of potential state losses saved from this arrest is IDR 22.6 billion.
