Researchers say the mountain was previously thought to be extinct, but is now showing signs of activity after being dormant for hundreds of thousands of years.

New research published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters found the volcano’s peak will rise about 3.5 inches between July 2023 and May 2024.
“This study is not to make people panic. This is a warning to the authorities in the Iranian region to seek resources to monitor this,” said lead author and volcanologist Pablo Gonzalez to the public, quoted by The Independent.
The researchers explain that the cause of this mountain’s growth is due to changes in the hydrothermal system beneath it.
This triggers a buildup of gas or a shift in magma beneath the crater.
“At some point it has to be released (the gas plume), either explosively or in a quieter way,” Gonzalez told Live Science.
Gonzalez emphasized that there is no threat of an eruption in the near future, but the mountain still needs to be monitored.
Meanwhile, doctoral student Mohammadhossein Mohammadnia is also working with Gonzalez to measure the rise of the mountain base using satellite imagery.
Since 2023, local residents have monitored gas emissions and its distinctive aroma can be smelled as far as 30 miles from the top of the mountain.
This giant volcano as high as 12,927 feet is the largest volcano in southeastern Iran.
This mountain rises above a group of small surrounding mountains formed from the crust of the Arabian Ocean.
Due to its remote location, monitoring and capturing accurate imagery is difficult.
Research and monitoring of this volcano is still continuing, involving collaboration with other experts in related fields.
