sunscreen
is an important routine to start the day to protect the skin from premature aging, sunburn (

), and risk of skin cancer.
But how often does sunscreen need to be reapplied throughout the day to achieve optimal protection?
Doctor Farrah Erman in a webinar held

“UVA exposure dominates the sunlight that enters the earth’s surface, around 95 percent. And this is able to penetrate clouds, the ozone layer and windows,” explained Dr.Farrah Erman, as reported

.
UVA rays themselves are responsible for causing this
photoaging
(premature aging) and risk of skin cancer.
Meanwhile, UVB rays only contribute about 5 percent of the exposure that enters the earth and do not penetrate clouds or ozone. However, UVB rays can cause
sunburn
and darkening of the skin.
When is the Best Time to Reapply Sunscreen?
For you women, it is recommended to use sunscreen every morning as the last step in your skin care routine, before applying make-up.
Dr.Farrah Erman explained,
reapply sunscreen
or reuse after first use is a must.
The best time to reapply is after 8 hours from first use. However, if you do certain activities that trigger the loss of protection, reapply must be done more quickly.
“Re-applying is a must. Re-applying is around 8 hours (after use). However, for example, less than 8 hours of activity, it is better to re-apply before 8 hours,” said Dr.Farrah Erman.
Reapplying sunscreen is important, especially after:
– Swimming
– Heavy sweating – Rubbing or wiping areas of the face and body
Prof.Cita R.S Prokoeswa, MD, Ph.D, added, for those who swim, it is recommended to use it
water-resistant sunscreen
(waterproof) and have to reapply more often.
Correct Usage Dosage
Apart from intensity
reapply
, the amount of sunscreen used must also be sufficient for maximum protection.
Dr.Farrah Erman suggests the ideal dose of sunscreen is:
– Face and Neck Area: 1 to 2 teaspoons (tsp)
– Body Area: 2 to 3 teaspoons (tsp)
To make it easier to estimate the face and neck area, you can use a simple method.”We can apply (sunscreen) to both fingers. That is approximately 1 to 2 teaspoons (tsp} that we can use for the face and neck area,” said Dr. Farrah Erman.
