Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the Tel Aviv government would bring 1,200 members of the Bnei Menashe community to northern Israel to be placed among them in Nof HaGalil.
Netanyahu stated that immigration of Indian Jews was important to strengthen Israel’s northern regions, especially the Galilee.
The Galilee is the northern region of Israel which is often the target of attacks by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia group.
Tens of thousands of Israelis have left the area following the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

Bnei Menashe is a Jewish community that settled on the border of India and Burma.In India, this community is known as Shinlung or Kuki.

Israel officially recognized the Bnei Menashe in 2005 when the then Sephardi Chief Rabbi designated the community as the original descendants of the Israeli tribe.
After becoming Jewish, the Bnei Menashe community observed traditional Jewish customs, celebrating holidays such as Sukkot, and establishing a synagogue.
