Israelis pursue Portuguese citizenship because of benefits such as a Schengen visa for visiting European countries, affordable living costs, easy entry into European universities, and low tuition fees.
On Saturday (29/11) morning, they were in a long queue at the Citu Glilot Cinema, Israel to apply for Portuguese citizenship or renew their passports.

The long queue from the embassy entrance to the underground parking area occurred after the Portuguese Embassy allowed direct processing of Portuguese citizenship or passport extensions in December and January, without scheduling.
This occurred due to the implementation of a special service day called “Back to the Past” by the embassy for face-to-face meetings to overcome congestion in the online booking system, reported the Middle East Monitor website.
Moreover, the Portuguese Embassy’s announcement on the official Facebook account says “open to all Portuguese citizens.”
So the news spread quickly, and many people came, exceeding the capacity of the venue, queuing long all day.
In a post on Facebook, Portugal also said thousands of citizens were “helped” and that no one had been displaced.”
Since 2015, Portugal has given the descendants of Sephardic Jews who experienced persecution during the 16th century Inquisition the opportunity to apply for citizenship.
However, due to a surge in applications, the Portuguese government declared that in 2023 the regulation had met its objectives and set strict conditions.
Since Israel began its attack on Gaza in October 2023, the number of Israelis seeking a “second passport” has increased.
Tens of thousands of Israelis are leaving the country, and interest in Portuguese citizenship continues to rise.
Israel itself enforces dual citizenship or two passports for its citizens.
