This plane disappeared from radar 40 minutes after taking off from Kuala Lumpur and was heading for Beijing, China.
“Maritime exploration company Ocean Infinity will conduct a search in a target area deemed to have the highest probability of finding the newest aircraft,” said a statement from the Malaysian Ministry of Transport.
This latest search was held based on principles
“no find, no fee”
, where the Malaysian government will only pay if Ocean Infinity finds the plane.
Based on the latest data, the plane was last tracked when pilot Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah ended the conversation by saying
“Good night, Malaysian Three Seven Zero”
.At that time, the plane entered Vietnamese airspace.
Not long after that, the transponder went dead, meaning the plane could not be tracked.According to military radar, the plane left its flight path and returned to the airspace of North Malaysia and Penang Island, then out into the Andaman Sea towards the tip of Sumatra Island, Indonesia.
The plane turned south and all contact was lost.
Various search methods have been used, including analysis of satellite data, showing the plane likely crashed somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean, off the coast of Western Australia, he was quoted as saying

.
In 2018, Ocean Infinity also led a search but to no avail. An initial Australian-led search across an area of 120,000 square kilometers in the Indian Ocean over three years also found almost no trace of the plane.

Underwater search
Malaysia, Australia and China launched an underwater search in an area of 120,000 square km in the southern Indian Ocean.
The search in the area was based on automatic connection data between the Inmarsat satellite and the aircraft.
The search cost around A$200 million and was stopped after two years in January 2017, as no trace of the plane was found.
In 2018, Malaysia accepted US exploration company Ocean Infinity’s offer of a three-month search, meaning the company would be paid only if it found the plane.
The search covered an area of 112,000 sq km north of the initial target area and also proved fruitless. The search ended in May 2018.
Debris
More than 30 pieces of suspected aircraft debris were found and collected along the coast of Africa and on islands in the Indian Ocean.
However, of the dozens of pieces of debris, only three wing fragments were confirmed to be from MH370.
Most of the debris was used in analysis of movement patterns in the hope of narrowing down the plane’s possible location.
Investigation report
The 495-page report, released in July 2018, said the Boeing 777’s controls may have been deliberately manipulated to take the plane off course. However, investigators were unable to determine who was responsible.
The report highlighted mistakes made by Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control centers and issued recommendations to avoid a repeat of the incident.
Investigators have not yet reached any conclusions about what happened to MH370, and have said that depends on finding the wreckage.
Conspiracy theory
Years of searching without significant results sparked a series of conspiracy theories ranging from mechanical error to alien abduction.
In recent years, a number of aviation experts have suggested the most likely explanation is that the plane was deliberately diverted from its course by an experienced pilot.
However, investigators emphasized that there was nothing suspicious about the pilot after examining the finances and mental health of the pilot and co-pilot.
