According to the Electoral College, Jetten is just 29,668 votes ahead of Wilders. This result is also a signal to Europe that the wave of populism and right-wing politics can be balanced with positive campaigns.
“I think we have shown Europe and the world that populism can be defeated if the campaign is carried out with a positive message for the country,” said Jetten, quoted by AFP, Saturday (8/11).
However, before officially leading the government, Jetten must form a government coalition, a process that in the Dutch political system often takes months.
The D66 party led by Jetten won 26 seats in the 150-member parliament.Meanwhile, the PVV Party, led by Geert Wilders, also won 26 seats.
In all, 15 parties managed to enter parliament, including animal rights parties and groups representing senior citizens.
Despite losing 11 seats compared to the previous victory in 2023, the right-wing political strength remains solid.
Forum for Democracy rose from 3 to 7 seats, while JA21 jumped from 1 to 9 seats.
Jetten plans to form a coalition of four parties across the political spectrum, namely the CDA (18 seats), VVD (22 seats) and the leftist alliance, Green/Labor (20 seats).
The coalition will have a majority in parliament with 86 seats.
However, VVD leader, Dilan Yesilgoz, refused to form a coalition with the left, and preferred a right alliance with CDA, JA21 and D66 even though he only had a total of 75 seats.
As a first step, Jetten appointed Wouter Koolmees, head of the Dutch national railway company, as a political “scout” to explore possible coalitions.
The initial report on the formation of the coalition is scheduled to be submitted on Tuesday (11/11).
Meanwhile, Geert Wilders admitted defeat even though he continued to accuse of vote fraud.
Chairman of the Electoral Board Wim Kuijken emphasized that the election results were valid and credible.
“The election process in the Netherlands takes place with a mature and strong system,” he said.
Kuijken said the number of counting errors actually decreased from 14,000 in 2021 to around 8,000 this year.
“There are no irregularities that could raise doubts about the election results,” said Kuijken.
