In a press conference at the YLBHI Building on Saturday (22/11), Isnur emphasized that now is not the time to accommodate but to comprehensively read the Criminal Procedure Code.
“The Ministry of Human Rights should be asked, is it involved or not? Because the Ministry of Human Rights will be held accountable in international eyes,” said Isnur at a civil coalition press conference urging the head of state to issue a Perpu to cancel the Criminal Procedure Code.
Isnur said international forums such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) were evaluating the situation in Indonesia.
Both forums are under the auspices of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The situation report, he said, described the bad conditions in Indonesia.
“This Criminal Procedure Code will further make things worse for Indonesia in the UN forum, in the UPR trial forums, in the ICCPR trial forum,” said Isnur.
The UN Human Rights Units will receive complaints from the people of UN member countries and then review them further by the review team.
“So, Ministry of Human Rights, Mr. Pigai, get ready to be ridiculed and criticized extraordinarily by the UN forum,” said Isnur.
Indonesia has ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) through Law no.12 of 2005.
Pigai previously said that the Ministry of Human Rights opened the door for people who wanted to convey their aspirations regarding the Criminal Procedure Code.
He claims that the human rights elements in the Criminal Procedure Code have actually been fulfilled.
However, Isnur and civil organizations who are members of the Civil Coalition for KUHAP Reform criticized this legal product.
According to them, the Criminal Procedure Code threatens civil liberties, has the potential to target human rights defenders, and disguises the National Police Law which was previously rejected by the public.
They then urged the President of Indonesia to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) to cancel the implementation of this legal product.
