Reported by AFP, Mamdani is a 34 year old socialist who was born in Uganda and grew up in New York City.During the campaign, he focused on reducing the cost of living for New Yorkers, building support through his relaxed personal style and friendly image on social media.
US President Donald Trump labeled Mamdani a “Jew-hater”.
“Any Jew who votes for Zohran Mamdani, a man who is proven and admits to HATING JEWS, is a fool,” Trump wrote on social media some time ago.
Syracuse University political science professor Grant Reeher said Mamdani’s victory would fuel a dispute with Trump.
“Trump will treat New York City more aggressively. There will be some kind of political fight,” he said.
Earlier this week, Trump said he would cut New York City’s federal government funding if Mamdani was elected.
“If communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York City, it is very unlikely that I will distribute federal funds other than the minimum amount required for the first city I love,” Trump said in his post on Truth Social as quoted by The Guardian.
“As president, I don’t want to send good money to cover bad things. I firmly believe that New York City will be a total economic and social disaster if Mamdani wins,” he added.
